Linocut/ Printmaking

In this module, students will experience the basics of linocut and print, of up to 2 colours (excluding black and white) using the reduction process. For practice, students select a simple motif of interest e.g. leaf, rabbit, flower or cat. For the project, students will take photos, design and finally cut and print their self-portrait in the style of (German) Expressionism.

Station 1: Inking

One person at one station at all times. Roller can be placed facing up with the flat side at rest. Use only one roller. Make sure your roller is clean and able to roll smoothly.

Place printing paper on the Lino block

Hold one end of the paper lower than the other. Use 2 fingers (left hand) to align and hold down the edge of the paper against the template marker. Once aligned, let go of the paper on your other hand (right). Gently tap to ensure paper is stuck onto the Lino block.

Remember write your class-index no., and no. of print on the top left and right corner respectively.

Beyond basics: Reduction Process for Colour Prints

If you are planning a coloured work, do not cut the lino all the way to its final look. Watch the video (right) to understand the cutting in stages (reduction process) for a 3-coloured print.
