I am A Piece of Art

Cardboard Portrait Relief by Secondary Two 2023 (2E, 2F, 2G, 2H, 2I)

Students used a variety of cardboard and product boxes – the number one recyclable ‘waste’ in Singapore. They appropriate design elements on these boxes found at home to make shirts and blouses for their avatars. They also crafted hair styles out of corrugated cardboard/ special papers. These hairpieces and cardboard clothes are also made interchangeable, much like the paper dolls which were popular since mid-18th century.

In this art project, students were challenged to conserve cardboard and resources. Paying attention and sensitivity to the textures of different cardboard and papers, they crafted desired hairstyles and shirts. Some of them featured at least 2 different hairstyles and/or shirts/blouses. Students used their self-portrait photographs and whilst turning themselves into a piece of art, they also learnt to appreciate and find humor in their self-image.
