Feldman’s Method of Art Criticism

from Singapore Teachers’ Academy for the aRts (STAR), Facilitative Questions, 2017,Investigating Art: Ideas on Museum-based Learning, Ministry of Education

The following content is adapted from Feldman, E. B. (1994). Practical Art Criticism. Prentice-Hall. The step “Connection and Wonderment” is added to the existing four-step process, adding a learner-centred perspective to learning about art criticism.

See adaptation for CID Emblem Analysis
Purpose: Feldman’s method of art criticism can be used to structure students’ encounter with an art object. Besides “Describe, Analyse, Interpret and Evaluate”, an additional category “Relate” is included. By connecting the artwork to students’ lived experiences, and encouraging their curiosity, the discussion can guide students to a heightened and directed interpretation of the art object.
